No IP Address

I'm helping a friend with this problem, after using Adaware to clean up the
XP computer he cannot access the internet. He has a cable connection,
everything in network properties looks fine but he can't get an IP address.
Cox techs have been out but only say it's a problem within his computer.
Virus scan is negative does this sound familiar to anyone.

Try removing the connection/driver and reinstall.

I had problems with Adaware. It would block too much and cause things not to
work properly. I switched to Spybot.
