no hard drive found

Suddely my laptop has stopped recognizing my hard drive. The computer
will not load windows xp home. The first dell screen shows the loading
bar ( I think this is the BIOS, I am not sure) then the screen goes
black and says "Disk Read Error." I have tried booting from the cd. I
have tried to use the recovery console and use chkdsk, but it does not
recognize the drive. The hard drive has not been taken out recently. Is
there any fix to this besides a new hard drive?
