No dial tone when faxing

B

blondieblue227

I know my computer is able to fax. But after I had my Operating System
reinstalled I can’t figure it out.

I added the fax componet from XP’s cd under control panel.
I have XP service pack 2.

Under fax properties it says:
Model: Microsoft shared fax driver
Device Name: softV90 Data fax modem #2 TSID: Fax CSID: Fax

Under device manager:
softV90 Data fax modem #2 - enabled

What’s the problem? Two weeks ago it was working fine. Why no dial tone?
Do I have the line in the wrong port?
Pic here: http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y175/blondieblue227/FaxPortB.jpg
Does the line belong in A or B?

Thank you.

You've probably figured this out already, but you have the line in the
wrong jack. The one with the pictograph of a telephone is where you
would connect a telephone (surprise!) if you wanted to use that line to
make calls. The other one (A) is where the line from the wall goes.

niether of those symbols look like a phone to me.
top: a square rectangle shape
bottom: a donut with the middle about to be taken out.

yes, i've tried both jacks with a restart in between.

The jack you've labeled "B," which is the one into which you've got the
cord plugged, is the place where you connect an optional telephone.
That pictogram, which you describe as "a donut with the middle about to
be taken out" is supposed to be an old-fashioned dial (not push-button)
telephone. The top (towards the edge of the case, where the letters
are) is the handset; the circle is the dial; and the part with the
straight line is the bottom base of the phone.

The other pictogram is supposed to look like a wall jack.

For a clearer picture, with explanation, see Item 4 on page 1 of
http://www.usr.com/support/5699a/5699a-files/10031167usca.pdf
Also see the first explanation for "PROBLEM: My modem won’t dial out or
doesn’t answer incoming calls" on page 2 of the pdf.

Where did you get the cord that you're using to connect the modem to the
wall jack?

Try connecting a phone to that wall jack. Does it get a dial tone? Now
connect Jack A on the modem to the wall and your phone to Jack B. Does
the phone get a dial tone?

I don't have a solution for you, but you can try these.

How did you set the modems speaker (or what did you mean by "set to make
a sound when dialing)? Did you add additional modem commands to the
initialization string? If so, what commands?

Have you tried to dial your cell phone or another phone in the house so
you can see if it is dialing out?

Have you tried unchecking the "wait for dial tone before dialing" box on
the "modem" tab of the modem's properties (from device manager)?

i tested the phone cord in a regular phone. it works fine. got a dial tone.
my computer fax was working fine until i had to reinstall the operating
system.
i have the cord in the upper jack now. retanglar shape symbol.

i saw that it was on com5. tested it on every com. didn't work. i have it
