No desktop after upgrade from 2000 Pro to XP Pro.

Been on this site for 48 hours straight as it's the only place I know where I
might be able to get my crashed system up after XP upgrade. I upgraded from
2000Pro to XP Pro INCLUDING SP2 !. I wonder if that has anything to do with
it. It will boot thru the "WINDOWS xp" with blue dots, then black, then light
blue screen with operating cursor, the way it does befor going to the
desktop, but the desktop never shows up. Some kind sole said to wait for five
minutes. One time I waited for nine hours. If I insert the CD to autostart I
can hear it run and a picture of a
CD shows up on the screen, but nothing happens. Sure would appreciate any
help anyone can give me. It's going to be a long third night.

Hey Jim .... Have a look at this site , its about performing an clean
install of windows xp ... You might want to start over with a clean install
.... Also you can perform this with your upgrade version of windows xp cd
disc , have a look at this website in how its done and more

Hey Roadrunner. Thanks for the tip. I have all my nineteen years of
accumulated data, some of it extremely important, backed up on a second drive
with MS Backup in 2000 Pro.
Can I restore data from a 2000 Pro backup to an XP C:drive? I'm assuming
I'm going to loose all the data and programs on the C drive when I do a clean
install of XP.
I would give anything to just restore my 2000 Pro installation and start
over or not at all. I'm in pretty big trouble with this trashed computer. I'm
writing this on a new laptop I had to get just to learn how to restore my
desktop.
Thanks for the help. I sure appreciate it.

Is your 2000 pro operating system on the C drive now ? Do
you have 2 hard drive ? Why can't you just uninstall xp ?

Yes it is. I upgraded 2000 Pro on the C: drive to XP Pro. I have a second
drive with a backup made with 2000 Pro "Backup" program. What do you mean by
uninstall XP? Wouldn't that be like formating it? I was told I can't go back
to 2000 Pro.
Thanks,
Jim
