? No browser functionality

I've got a Direcway satellite connection to the 'Net. A desktop PC, running
W2K Pro, connects to the 'Net just fine with the latest iteration of IE6 (via
automatic Windows Updates) as its browser.

Last week I added a Linksys wireless router to the configuration and again
the desktop PC accesses the 'Net AOK via the browser. Aside from the Internet
connectivity port, the router has 4 wired ports for PCs. I'm only using these
at the moment (i.e., no wireless devices yet).

Now I'm sorting out a recent-vintage, top-of-the-line HP laptop whose
browser won't function. It was originally setup for IE 6, but my daughter
subsequently installed Mozilla FireFox on it. After initially installing the
wireless router, FireFox ran OK on this laptop, but IE didn't function at all.

Next, I ran CA's PestPatrol on the laptop and eradicated 84 instances of
adware, spyware, and malware. Via CD, I then *manually* updated this system
to XP SP2 along with post-SP2 security patches. At that point neither IE (now
updated to version 6.0.2900.x, as I recall from this morning's attempt) nor
FireFox worked! Oh, and I have carefully matched IE's [LAN Settings]
configuration with that found on the functioning desktop system (using DHCP
and a 192.168.0.1 proxy server located at port 87).

I can PING any website I've tried, so my network connectivity is OK as far
as the (wired) LAN IP address and DHCP goes. Through iTunes I am successful
in connecting to the Apple music store, so the issue is strictly a
browser-related problem.

Might I have some HTTP/HTTPS ports closed and, if so, what's the easy way of
checking and testing this? If this isn't the problem, then what?

PROBLEM:
Though I've downloaded IE6setup.exe onto a CD and have some sort of Internet
connectivity (remember I can PING), I cannot reinstall IE on this machine. It
complains that a newer version is installed (probably true after the XP
SP2+patches installation). Neither IE nor FireFox can display any external
web page.

UPDATE:
Tried again this morning in the event that poor weather yesterday was
interfering with the satellite connection. Alas, the problem persists,
BUT.... And i used a different cable connected to a different router port,
with the desktop PC displaying another website. SO-O-O...indeed the problem
is with browser functionality proper, as opposed to a wider network
connectivity issue.

What's going on here? What should I try next?

Is the problem consistently on the laptop? If so, and bearing in mind that you
"eradicated 84 instances of adware, spyware, and malware", you probably need to
check for LSP / Winsock corruption.

One questions, being new to XP (but not to other Win versions):

How do I create a restore point?

Thanks

How do I create a restore point?

(All Programs - Accessories - ) System Tools - System Restore. And walk thru
the wizard.

Chuck: I installed AutoRuns and though I could detect it scanning, it
depicted *nothing* in the WinSock tab (other tabs had lots to report, so it
wasn't an AutoRuns problem). Using RegEdit, I then did an export of the
WinSock and WinSock2 keys. This yielded many existing entries in those keys.

Why do you suppose AutoRuns isn't reporting anything?

Is it time for a repair installation, followed by updating the patches again?

When you run Autoruns with "Hide Signed Microsoft Entries" enabled, and all
entries are Microsoft drivers, you'll get a null report.

Did you try the fixes, before trying the Autoruns enumeration (which it appears
only shows Microsoft entries)?

Yes, I ran all fixes, in order, prior to AutoRuns. I had to reboot twice,
with one fix apparently doing nothing at all (there was no visible clue that
it ran, anyway). I thought I had "Hide Signed Microsoft Entries" disengaged
but, come to think of it, it may have been ON as I engaged the Verification
option. I'll try again this evening. If AutoRuns does report WinSock entries,
what's next in relation to restoring the Winsock functionality?

Well, if you've truly tried all of the LSP fixes that I've described in my
article, including resetting TCP/IP, then:
# Report this problem at DSLR Security Cleanup, and make sure that the spyware
is gone (follow instructions there).
<http://www.dslreports.com/forum/cleanup>
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/cleanup
# Un install / re install the network card driver.
# Repeat the Network Setup Wizard.
# Repair install Windows.
# Flatten and pave.
In that order. If I was in front of the computer, and had time, I'd try a
little adhoc diagnostics before each step. It would be helpful to have SOME
idea of what's truly wrong, so when this happens again, you'll have some idea
what to try and what not to try.

Restting TCP/IP... is there a netsh routine for this?

browser-related problem.

<http://www.dslreports.com/forum/cleanup>
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/cleanup
# Un install / re install the network card driver.
# Repeat the Network Setup Wizard.
# Repair install Windows.
# Flatten and pave.
In that order. If I was in front of the computer, and had time, I'd try a
little adhoc diagnostics before each step. It would be helpful to have SOME
idea of what's truly wrong, so when this happens again, you'll have some idea
what to try and what not to try.
