Suddenly Can't Connect to the Internet

Hi,
I have two desktops connected via router to a DSL modem. Neither IE nor
Firefox can connect on the Windows XP machine, but can ping google.com from
the command line. Spyware and anti-virus programs update with no problem.

The Linux desktop can connect to the internet (as you see).

Nothing changed that I'm aware of on the XP machine, unless an automatic
Windows update might have altered something.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Do you use Zone Alarm?

Hi John,
This sounds like the culprit. I do use Zone Alarm and also automatic
updates so I know the Microsoft patch was installed. Will get the latest
version of Zone Alarm installed and let you know if that solves the
problem.

Thank you so much.

You need release 7.0.483.000 (many threads in
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general have discussed
this problem, and most of them have tailed off now
483 has been released -- the ZoneAlarm forum will
also draw your attention to the solution).
