no boot at all

i had multiple power cuts last week and this has totally
knackered the computer.
the mbr i think has totally gone and all important files
like command.com and config.sys.
the recovery console wont do anything and the harddrive is
full so i cant create a new partition.
I need to get nito dos and delete some files on the C:
so i can install a new partition.

Any ideas. i'm running XP and loads of boot disks i
download just wont work.

Hi,

The power outages may have damaged the hard drive. Download and run a drive
diagnostic from the web site of your hard drive manufacturer. These are
usually free utilities that run from a bootable floppy. See what it says
about the state of the drive.

If nothing boots in the machine (hard drive, floppy, or CD) and you've
recheck the BIOS boot options, then you may have damaged the motherboard or
the power supply. This should be brought to a shop for proper diagnosis and
testing.

Incidentally, deleting files will not make room for a new partition. That
requires either unpartitioned space on the drive, or the ability to resize
an existing partition (something the WinXP drive tools cannot do).

diagnostic tool which may help to find out the condition of the hard drive.
