NO AUDIO/SOUND

Have on-board SoundMax on a Dell Dimension 3000. Sound suddenly died. Can
hear a slight hum from desktop speakers and when machine boots a crackling
sound. Have brought machine back to factory settings and started from
scratch. Downloaded chipset, then correct driver. No sound. After 1 week
of frustrtion installed an external Turtle Beach Sound Card. Install went
fine, heard fabulous sound from the DEMO just after install for about 10
seconds. Then the sound went out the window. So have two sound cards, one
internal and one external. I checked the bios...the sound is set to ON.

I have been on the DELL forums for three days. There are some real pro's
who have been helping, but I still do not have sound. My take is it's a
Microsoft/Dell problem. Of course, I'm past the warranty period by a couple
months!

Thanks, but, of course, that was one of the first things I did. I have gone
way beyond that. It seems to be a BIOS setting maybe the CMOS. This seems
to be a more serious problem that the normal volume settings, etc.
Microsoft's Troubleshooters are OK for basic problems, but do not cover more
serious internal OS problems.

In a previous post, you said that you had internal sound on at the same
time you have an external sound card installed. That is not a good idea.
If you want to try an external card, uninstall the drivers for the
on-board sound chip, turn off in the BIOS both sound and MIDI, install
the drivers for the external card, and then make your tests.

I'm not sure what you mean by this:

one internal and one external. I checked the bios...the sound is set to
ON.

I'm not sure what an "external" sound card is. Do you mean you added a PCI
sound card inside the computer? If yes, then go back into the BIOS and
disable the onboard sound. It should not be ON.
