Weird.
I've even checked on the net, and while theres plenty of people with this
problem, thus far I've seen no answer that actually works !
And theres not many proffered answers, either.
Yes, I've uninstalled in sound/vision whatsits in Device manager, still same
after reboots.
Strange thing - when this happened, Vista demanded activation, when it
already WAS activated.
I'm wondering if the inbuilt sound card has died on the mobo.

Since others are suffering the same problem, I doubt the integrated sound
card has died. If you have a highly integrated mobo, then you may need to
have other drivers updated to recognize the integrated sound. Some Vista
drivers are "compatible" by limiting their functionality. Make sure all your
drivers are the latest from the manufacturers.

If you have a disk for the mobo hardware drivers, install the drivers
manually as administrator.

Then, perform a scan from:
http://www.driveragent.com/scan.php?fn=scan2
to determine what drivers need to be updated.

You can then go to the repsective websites and get the drivers or use the
program to get them. (I use Driver Detective from www.drivershq.com, it's
cheaper.)
