no active mixer device

I cannot get my speakers to work. I tried trouble shooting. It keeps saying
" There are no active mixer devices avalible" I tried to install, yet still
nothing. Please help

Did you recently install something (software, updates, etc.) that you think
could have caused this? Or do you put your machine on "Standby" every night?

I noticed after installing several updates, a few months ago, that sound
would not play if I put my machine on "Standby" for the night. I do not see
this behavior after putting the machine on "Hibernate" or completely shutting
it down. If a restart does not solve... I would try to download the driver
again and re-install.
