newsgroup shows incorrect unread count

I've had this problem with XP/OE and it seems to exist with a new install of
Vista/Windows Mail.

After a while, a newsgroup starts showing an unread count when it shouldn't.
For example, at the
moment, m.p.vc.ide.general shows that I have 3 unread . When I select it,
no posts show up.
If I do "catch up" from the right click menu, it clears but it comes back
next time I select the group.

It seems that this happens after running the automatic "Windows mail can
optimize..." thing.

A second thing is that "catch up" seems to take a lot longer after running
this optimize. Clicking
on a message, doing a select all, and then mark as read works immediately.
This also existed
with XP pro.

Is there any way to reset whatever is causing this?

It sometimes helps to click Tools, then Get Next nnn Headers a few times,
where nnn is usually 300, to make sure you have downloaded all the
messages the newsgroup offers.

Known problem caused when the servers on a server farm get out of synch

If you're familiar with Outlook Express the Mozilla version Thunderbird
should be relatively intuitive for you to set up. My main reason for
using Thunderbird is that it looks and behaves the same under Windows
and Linux, but it would be interesting to know if you saw the same
problem with it with your choice of groups.

I used to see this with OE occasionally, with Windows Mail (Well the
original "Live" thing) as well but using Thunderbird on both Vista and
Linux I don't see it.

(That doesn't mean I disagree with Frank at all, I think he is correct,
but for some reason I have not seen it for a long time)

I was using Thunderbird for a while under XP but I don't remember if
it did the same thing. It seems to me that this started happening when
I installed sp2 for XP though I can't be sure.

I stopped using Thunderbird under windows
because it was too sluggish with some of the things that I use (like
hiding read newsgroup threads). I still use it under Linux sometime but
Fedora has a different newsreader these days (that's the distro we've
been using at the office) and I haven't decided which I prefer.

Well I found the thread thing a real serious problem with the first live
mail, wondered if it was something related to the servers though as it
seemed much worse on these MS groups than on others.

Actually, I first noticed it on comp.lang.c++ and I still see the problem
with that group at times. It has been just recently that I've seen it
with the MS groups. And then it's mostly been m.p.vc.ide_general
and not the others that I monitor (mostly vc related groups until my
recent Vista upgrade)
