New XP Home Install

I purchased an OEM copy of XP home last year from the
vendor who built my PC - they are now defunct and the
system crashed.
I have been trying for more than ne week to install this
software. I have an AMD 1800+ chip, 256 meg of ram (new) a
new power supply, and a new cd/dvd player.
After days of STOP messages and file not found messages
and looking at multiple forums, I removed everything from
the box and loaded the default BIOS. I also disaled the l1
and l2 cache.
At that point the setup started (slow as molasses) and ran
to the point that it was making a list of files and showed
39 minutes to completion. That step took 14 hours to
complete. Then it went to Deleting files 29 minutes to
completion. Sixty (60) hours later it was still at that
step. The display window was looping thru all of the
great things XP can do to make my computing life easier
and the little bar on the lower left cotinued to move -
slowly. The progress bar on the left remained blank.
Someone turned off the machine. When I turned it on again,
the CD booted, displayed the prompt for booting from a CD,
displayed the examining your configuration message anad
then went to a black screen, never to return.
I tried rebooting woth my windows 98 startup disk - to
reinstall win 98SE but the HD is not available, even to
the fdisk process.
Anyone have any thoughts?
