Slow install of XP Home w/SP2 a record

What's going on here?
I'm installing XP Home with SP2 upgrade from a new CD with a good Win95 disc
as verification of eligibility. It's going on a newly rebuilt system: Athlon
XP2400+, MSI KT4V mobo, 2 NEW 40Ghz Seagate HDDs, 512 MB SDRAM, Nvidia FX5500
AGP, CD-ROM, DVD-RW...
I had some trouble getting it going (installing via CD-ROM boot BTW); on one
try, it couldn't seem to find files and those it did find it was often unable
to copy to disc.
Gettig past that, mostly by retrying and reformatting C:, I finally got it
to start it's install.
That was over 16 hours ago! It is still on the "installing windows" (4th of
5) button. I started this install about 4:00 a.m. When I got home from work
at 3:00 p.m., it said "Setup will complete in approximately 35 minutes." It's
now 9:00 p.m., and "setup will complete in approximately 14 minutes."
It seems every step is excruciatingly slow. Any ideas as to the problem?
Even better, a solution?
Thanks in advance...

What is a 40Ghz hard disk drive?

OMG I can' t believe to read this from you. Does that have anything to
do with his problem?

There will always be people mixing up Ghz and Mhz or GB etc.

Be honest, you have no idea what is wrong.

At least it doesn't have 500mb of RAM (stores just one bit of data, which
doesn't quite manage a logic '1' at that! <g>)

Seriously, this sounds like a typical CD/DVD drive problem.

One other possibility could be bad, mismatched or incompatible RAM. As
strange as it sounds, I have seen where bad RAM can keep Windows, Linux
or even Unix from installing on a PC.

Use this program here, it's free: http://www.memtest86.com/ I use the
3.2 release to troubleshoot your memory. Let it go all the way through
though, it could take an hour or two. There are many tests that it runs
against the memory sticks. Also if you have multiple sticks in your
Mobo and it does detect an error, it will not tell you which one it is
on, but you can take one out or all but one and rerun the test to
identify the culprit. It is time consuming, yes, but well worth it to
help eliminate any problems.

I hope that this helps out.

Some motherboards can tell you the addresses of the sticks, but you
still have to know which slot is slot 1.
