New XP Home installation trouble

I am fitting a new hard drive to a fully working computer. I want a fresh
installation of XP Home on the new drive and then format the small existing
drive.
I have set up the new drive as master and tried to boot up using the Windows
CD after changing the bios to suit.
When I switch on all the memory and components are recognised on the start
up screen. I then get the message that it will boot up from CD. Then Windows
is checking my hardware. Then it goes no further. The message disappears and
the CD winds down and stops.
If I connect the new drive as a slave it works OK and can be formatted and
files dragged over to it using Explorer.
Anyone got any suggestiond on how I can install XP from this situation?

Youre set-up is incorrect..1st,set new hd as solo on IDE cable, all other
add-ons
must be disconnected as well (printers/scanners,etc),set BIOS to boot to xp
cd
(1st boot device priority or similiar),set new hd as 2nd,boot to xp
cd,install xp.
Also, even if the hd is newly formatted, delete the partition, create one, then
xp
formats and installs auto, replug all else back in once xp is up and
running....
