New Windows Defender, ver 1347 out

only clean up. too much free time. hehe

Wierd--the site claims that both those files are the same version.

I would STRONGLY recomment not getting Microsoft files from a non-microsoft
source such as that site. "free of charge"--indeed. When has Microsoft
charged for that file? It's risky getting Microsoft code from a
non-Microsoft source.

If you are still in a mood for experimentation, you might see whether
there's such a file in:

\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50215

and consider moving it there for a test.

Bill:
I've tried putting mvscr80.dll from
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?msvcr80 in
c:\windows\system32 by that was not the sollution; defender couldn't find an
entry point in that dll.

Well, what the... i've downloaded from
http://www.down-dll.com/index.html?frameA=dll_M and put the DLL in
c:\windows\system32, installed 1347 and now it runs.

Only worry now is a remark someone from microsoft made: msvcr80.dll
shouldn't be in system32. Anyway defender problem fixed. Thanks Bill.

Hiek.

:
Thanks--I thought you must be on SP2, otherwise things wouldn't be working.
At this point, I suspect that the DLL you need to replace is the one
associated with .NET 2.0--so reinstalling that seems the best way to go--is
that something you want to try?

What version of Windows is this? I'm running the new build, but I find I
have a bunch of that .dll on my drive, in different locations--none in either
program files\windows defender, nor in \system32. So--I'm not sure which one
it needs, nor what version--the ones I have are different sizes in different
locations.
==========================
Hi plun:
I've tried putting a downloaded mvscr80.dll in c:\windows\system32 by that
was not the sollution; defender couldn't find an entry point in that dll.
Then i downloaded it from the site which was mentioned in the thread you
gave. This wasn't the solution neither, the dll seem to be damaged.
BTW there is a guy who has pointed out that mvscr80.dll should be in
system32. It take this seriously. Thanks so far.

Hi Bill

If NET 2.0 is required it must be a mistake.

A lot of users don´t have NET 2.0 installed for different reasons.

Example ATi uses 2 different driver packages for their cards.
One "clean" without the NET "junk" as a lot of users stands for,
for a "hardcoded" gamer it´s absolutely a "crime" to install NET ;)

For those with problems and don´t want to install NET.
http://www.down-dll.com/index.html?frameA=dll_M

And is it included in NET 2.0 ???

Spoke too early. This morning when I logged on I got a message:

"Application failed to initialize: 0x800106ba. A problem caused Windows
Defender Service to stop. To start the service, restart your computer or
search Help and Support on how to start a service manually."

In the service properties I changed Log On to my own instead of Local System
account. The service still failed to start. Then I changed it back to Local
System account and this time the service started.

Well - I have msvcr80.dll in the framework folder, and I didn't put it
there--maybe mine is slightly out of date?

That thread begs the question--Martyn (?) says where NOT to put the file,
but not where it SHOULD be. Apparently Symantec can be made happy without
it, but as I recall, folks are saying the Defender install crashes without
it.

OK--I'll give up on the .NET thing--that may well be off-base--thanks for
telling me! I do need to know where that file ought to be, though. There's
conflicting info out here--one thread says putting it in system32 enables
the install to proceed, another says not.

For whatever reason, I sure have the feeling that there's something "broken"
about the underpinnings that enable Windows Defender to install and run on
Windows 2000. That's pretty strange--don't know what to say!

For whatever it's worth this is consistent behavior on the Win 2000 computer
I am using. I repeated this 5 times (restarting the machine).

The previous build of Windows Defender Beta 2 worked OK on this machine.

Yes--it isn't in the Defender folder, and also not in System32. So--it
isn't clear where it needs to be to resolve the error.

I haven't seen this on three Windows 2000 servers I've installed on. I do
have a windows 2000 workstation that I need to get to--will see if I can get
that done later today--it already evidences one bug from earlier on--the one
where it accesses the A drive irregularly throughout a scan--so with luck
it'll show some new bugs too!

It appears that it may be a manifest problem, I am not sure. I updated the
manifest file MSASCui.exe.manifest to include a dependency on the msvcr80.dll
that was installed on my system and things started working.
Here is what my manifest now reads:

I would take a look at the system event log to see if there are any other
clues there. I really cannot pin the exact issue down based on the
information provided. The system log may show some underlying OS issue which
may be causing the difficulties described.

Sorry. Due to the service not starting when turning on the computer and
since the computer is used by several other people I decided to restore a
pre-new beta 2 Windows Defender image to the hard disk. I did post in one of
these groups though the event text I got. Here it is:

=======

I had the same issue while installing Windows Defender yesterday. Here is
the
event I had at the time:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7023
Date: 04/13/2006
Time: 04:07:50 PM
User: N/A
Computer: 23NVCFW
Description:
The Windows Defender Service service terminated with the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

One trick that I did was to change the Log On in the properties of Windows
Defender Service to use my logon credentials instead of Local System. After
that when I tried to manually start the service the message I got was:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7023
Date: 04/14/2006

Description:
The Windows Defender Service service terminated with the following error:
General access denied error

Finally I changed the Log On in properties back to Local System account and
after that I was able to manually start the service.

However every time I restarted the computer I had to go thru the same steps
to get the Windows Defender service running. I went back to the previous
build because of this issue.

I haven't had a chance to look at the only Windows 2000 workstation I have
regular access to. Did you see Steve Dodson's message? Any clues in the
System events log you can see?

For whatever it's worth this is consistent behavior on the Win 2000
computer
I am using. I repeated this 5 times (restarting the machine).

The previous build of Windows Defender Beta 2 worked OK on this machine.

Spoke too early. This morning when I logged on I got a message:

"Application failed to initialize: 0x800106ba. A problem caused Windows
Defender Service to stop. To start the service, restart your computer or
search Help and Support on how to start a service manually."

In the service properties I changed Log On to my own instead of Local
System
account. The service still failed to start. Then I changed it back to
Local
System account and this time the service started.

:

I'm glad it worked in the end--thanks for persisting!

--

I tried a couple more times to install and then several times to
manually
start the service and it finally worked. I have no idea though what
made
it
work. Sorry.

:

At the end of the installation I get a message that the "WinDefend
service
could not be started. Check your priviledges blah blah blah".

With that message still on the screen I tried to manually start the
WinDefend service in Computer Management | Services and I got the
following
message:

"Could not start the Windows Defender service on Local Computer.
Error 2147942402: The system cannot find the file specified."

:

Are you running into any issues in installing updates? Please
provide
any
details so we can investigate.

In the link below, they (MS) state improvements include: "A

I believe that if you delete c:\program files\Windows
Defender\MSASCui.exe.manifest the problem will go away.

It appears that it may be a manifest problem, I am not sure. I updated
the
manifest file MSASCui.exe.manifest to include a dependency on the
msvcr80.dll
that was installed on my system and things started working.
Here is what my manifest now reads:

Is this a widespread issue? I read through that thread and it appears it
is
a .net 2.0 issue. Is this correct?
