New defender 1347 is a 5.49MB download, tho old is 6.40MB. I don't know what
is missing in the smaller new download. Because I removed the old and
installed the new, after restart I had the MSVCR80.dll popup. Solved problem
removing new, restart (no popup will show), install old, and install new
ontop of old.

Kes:

Downloaded 1051. It won't install: 'Error 1609. An error occured while
applying sercurity settings. User is not a valid user group. This could be a
problem with the package, or a problem connecting to a domain controller on
the network. Check your network connection and click Retry, or Cancel'

Any suggestions. Thanks so far.

Hi plun:

I've tried putting a downloaded mvscr80.dll in c:\windows\system32 by that
was not the sollution; defender couldn't find an entry point in that dll.
Then i downloaded it from the site which was mentioned in the thread you
gave. This wasn't the solution neither, the dll seem to be damaged. BTW there
is a guy who has pointed out that mvscr80.dll should be in system32. It take
this seriously. Thanks so far.

In the link below, they (MS) state improvements include: "A redesigned and
simplified user interface – Incorporating feedback from our customers, the
Windows Defender UI has been redesigned to make common tasks easier to
accomplish with a warning system that adapts alert levels according to the
severity of a threat so that it is less intrusive overall, but still ensures
the user does not miss the most urgent alerts."

It seems as it Microsoft overlooked one of the most important input items
users were giving them - request for easier and more efficient updating. I
think I'll pass on downloading this until they get their act together - IF
they ever do.

Hi Plun

Thanks for the info. Installed and updated defs without incident. BTW did
you install over previous or uninstall first?

Hi Stu

Well, if it is a MS program I always recommends that
just run the setup.

All "quality" programs today checks if something must be uninstalled
during setup, "automagic".

"Download and install".

Use Kes site to download old 1051 to desktop. Remove the defective Defender
you have and restart. NO popup should show, if it does , Defender was not
removed. Install old 1051 and Defender will open as usual. NOW INSTALL NEW
DEFENDER ONTOP OF 1051 and you will have version 1347. Let me know.

Hi Plun

Yes I have to agree. I tend to place my trust in the installer to tell me
what needs to be done unlike the old days when they weren`t so idiot proof;
Anyway did mine over the top without any probs.

I was reading Randys post linking to Sandi`s detective work under "New
WinDefend Updates" in this newsgroup. Bloody unbelievable the lengths to
which these b......ds will go (pardon my French); They ought to be seriously
rounded up and locked up in Guantanamo without trial; and to think the world
wants George Bush to close it down. Human rights? These malaware guys don`t
deserve any. Why should they? They don`t think of our human rights when they
invade our machines;

Hey - I take back my previous post in here. I just downloaded the new
version on both pc's and no problems. I even now have an icon in the
taskbars. Just hoping when update time comes again that there are no
problems. Thanks plun, for info. BTW I just installed the new version over
the old version - it automatically uninstalled the older version and
installed the new one.

What version of Windows is this? I'm running the new build, but I find I
have a bunch of that .dll on my drive, in different locations--none in
either program files\windows defender, nor in \system32. So--I'm not sure
which one it needs, nor what version--the ones I have are different sizes in
different locations.

Hi

I also thrust the installer when it comes from quality vendors.

Well about the other, it really stinks, "lowest of the lowest".....

The only way to stop this is to "inform", "inform" and "inform".
It then will be like you throwing a stone in water and the rings, it
spreads everywhere and after a while all users knows about it.

Every user must learn about these risks. We need a real worldwide
information campaign about it.

If also Windows Defender or other spywareapp with RTP functionality
detects this junk it´s possible to stop it or increase the damage.

To use a human being without knowledge is really rotten and
a shame for all of us. This must be stopped !

Hi Bill

All reports I have seen are OK ;)

Except the challenge with installs.

I haven't found this build to be different from previous builds in updating.

Are you on a managed corporate network, or is this a home machine?
