Is this a widespread issue? I read through that thread and it appears it is
a .net 2.0 issue. Is this correct?

That's one place I see this .dll file.

So--perhaps the correct fix is re-applying .NET 2.0?

Hi Bill

If thats the only fix (apart from the icon), I think for some it wil prove
to be a miracle not too mention a huge relief :)

Efrain:

My problem with 1051 from kes' site (or any other) it won't install. After a
while i get the following message:

"Product: Windows Defender -- Error 1609.An error occurred while applying
security settings. Users is not a valid user or group. This could be a
problem with the package, or a problem connecting to a domain controller on
the network. Check your network connection and click Retry, or Cancel to end
the install. Unable to locate the user's SID, system error 1332; (NULL);
(NULL); (NULL)."

This is from my application log. I also get this message in a pop-up. My
system is completely cleaned. No registry keys, no more defender folders.

I'm kinda stuck.

I suppose i had 1051 installed on my computer, it ran good except from
problems with the update. I got the advise to remove my defender
installation, download and install again. I did, but then i ran into my
msvcr80.dll is missing problem with 1347.

What do you make of this?

Hiek.

Hi plun:

I've tried putting a downloaded mvscr80.dll in c:\windows\system32 by
that
was not the sollution; defender couldn't find an entry point in that
dll.
Then i downloaded it from the site which was mentioned in the thread

there
is a guy who has pointed out that mvscr80.dll should be in system32. It

Thanks--I thought you must be on SP2, otherwise things wouldn't be working.

At this point, I suspect that the DLL you need to replace is the one
associated with .NET 2.0--so reinstalling that seems the best way to go--is
that something you want to try?

I don't have one in system32, under XP, fwiw.

sometimes, the presence of a code file in a particular location can
constitute a security vulnerability. I don't know that this is true with
this particular file, however.

Bill Sanderson MVP

Wierd--the site claims that both those files are the same version.

I would STRONGLY recomment not getting Microsoft files from a non-microsoft
source such as that site. "free of charge"--indeed. When has Microsoft
charged for that file? It's risky getting Microsoft code from a
non-Microsoft source.

If you are still in a mood for experimentation, you might see whether
there's such a file in:

\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50215

and consider moving it there for a test.

At the end of the installation I get a message that the "WinDefend service

With that message still on the screen I tried to manually start the

"Could not start the Windows Defender service on Local Computer.

In the link below, they (MS) state improvements include: "A
redesigned
and
simplified user interface - Incorporating feedback from our
customers, the
Windows Defender UI has been redesigned to make common tasks easier
to
accomplish with a warning system that adapts alert levels according
to the
severity of a threat so that it is less intrusive overall, but still
ensures
the user does not miss the most urgent alerts."

It seems as it Microsoft overlooked one of the most important input
items
users were giving them - request for easier and more efficient
updating.
I
think I'll pass on downloading this until they get their act
together - IF
they ever do.
