New Power Scheme Preference Without CSEs?

I could really use the Windows 2008 GP Client Side Extensions for a few
thousand XP machines, I think........

The one thing I really need is the Power Scheme Preference. I created a
test OU and applied a GPO with a Preference setting that creates a new Power
Scheme. I added a few XP machines to that OU. On one of these machines I
logged on and checked the Power Settings in Control Panel to find that the
Power Scheme I set in the GPO was applied.

I later went to the Windows Update Web site to get updates and found that
the Client Side Extensions were being offered, so I checked Add & Remove
Programs and confirmed that it was in fact not installed.

Does it make sense that this new preference item would apply to the XP
machine without the CSEs installed? If so, this would be really good news
since I may not be able to depend on Windows Updates to get the CSEs to all
of these machines.

Thanks.

Sorry about the false alarm. I am not certain, but I think I may have
created a Power Scheme using the same name via a logon script containing
powercfg.exe. I may have done this when using the same machine to test
different ways of getting the proper power settings through a GPO. I may be
able to confirm that later.

I tried to recreate this on a fresh XP machine and couldn't. However, in
doing so I may have gotten an answer to a post I made to the WSUS NG......
I see that it wants to install the CSEs from WSUS, where other XP machines
have a "Not Applicable" status in WSUS. I am guessing that the other
machines are "NA" because they didn't have any settings that need the new
CSEs.

Still, if anyone can confirm either of these things, that would be great.
Thanks.

Hello,

Thanks for the post.

The Group Policy Preference Client side extension is necessary for those
Windows XP clients that want to get any group policy preference items
applied. The KB943729 update will register the CSE (DLL file) that read and
apply preference items. This means that without this CSE installed Windows
XP will ignore all preference items including Group policy Power Options.

Hope it helps.

Sincerely,
Miles Li
