Hello all . I have nothing in the power schemes window. I cannot enter text.
I have run the reg fix[204] fromm kelly's korner does not work or does not
really run. In the folder options there is nothing listed in the opens with
section for reg file. when I run the reg file[204]it opens a text file in
notepad.I think windows is supposed to run it. should it be listed there in
the opens with section and if not what --if anything

the power settings work the way I had it when they were visible. Just shut
off monitor in 5 mins.

windows xp home. I periodically run crap cleaner.

Thanks

powercfgrestore.reg is the file from 204. Right hand side. Restore Power
Schemes/Configurations. Either double click powercfgrestore.reg or right
click powercfgrestore.reg and select Merge. The default action for double
clicking a .reg file is Merge.

Your default action could have been changed to Edit. To see, right click
powercfgrestore.reg, if Edit is in bold text Edit is the default action. If
that is the case, right click powercfgrestore.reg and select Merge.

If you right click powercfgrestore.reg and select Edit it will open in
Notepad and all you can do is look at it, it will do nothing else.

If and only if Merge does not work or is not a choice...

Thanks for reply. I had tried that one before too. It too opens in a text
file. When I right click the powercfgrestore reg file merge is not an option
and notpad is bold. I don't get the import prompt the doug knox is talking
about in the directions. It just asks if I want to run or open it and the it
opens in notepad just like the other one. Like I said before there is nothing
listed in the files associations box where it says opens with. I don't know
if there should be since I think it is windoes. I clicked the properties for
both files and onblocked them both in case that was it. It wasn't.

I was looking around and saw this [between the lines]where crap
cleaner[registry cleaner] puts its files before it deletes them for a back up
and restore
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\OpenWithList]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a reg file and I guess it was removed.I don't know if it is the
problem but I cannot restore it because it needs that merge option. It too
opens in ----you guessed it------- notepad.

Rock304,

Let's try this. Let's see how many registry entries for .reg are fouled up
and see how tough it'll be to fix them manually.

[[FileExtInfo utility is a small helper application that gathers information
about the association settings for a chosen file type. It exports all
possible registry locations that are associated with a particular file type.
The information (REG format) is consolidated and presented in a single text
file, to make troubleshooting easier.]] Thank you, Ramesh!

FileExtInfo - View the association settings for a file type easily
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/fileextinfo.htm

Download FileExtInfo.zip (contains fileextinfo.exe and readme.txt)
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/utils/fileextinfo.zip

1. Download FileExtInfo.zip
2. Unzip FileExtInfo.zip
3. Open FileExtInfo.exe.
4. In the left hand pane, scroll down to .REG and click on it.
5. Click on View associations for this file type button.
6. FileExtInfo.txt will be created on your Desktop.
7. Copy and paste the contents of FileExtInfo.txt into a message and post
back.

Found the answer. I think it was that the files were not set to be opened by
anything. I found this

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_easy_file.htm

downloaded the file and selected the assoc:regfile opened the command prompt
and pasted it hit enter then ran the fix and all was well. In my case i
needed to do this before i could run the reg fix.

Thanks for your help. I do appreciate it. Save that link.
