New Hardware Device Problem

Adding a device (Pentax Camera, Mini Cruzer, or Scandisk
Card Reader) to a USB port, my XP (SP2) computer will
ding twice and show up in the Device Manger with a yellow
question mark under "Other Device". I uninstalled the
device (as instructed in MS Knowledge 873169) and ran the
Hardware Update Wizard and it returns "Cannot install
this Hardware because it could not find the necessary
software". The Device Manager then shows an Yellow
Exclamation Mark in addition to the question mark (new
since SP2 install). All device manufactures say drivers
conform to USB mass storage and require no additional
software. These devices work fine on new showroom
computers. Does anyone know how to solve this
recognition problem so it will show up in My Computer
for data use? Any suggestion would be appreciated

What motherboard is this? You need to download and install the latest
chipset drivers and then reboot. This should help your cause ;)

Thanks so much for the reply.
I am unsure how to acquire this information. Microsoft
System Information utility shows I have the following
OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
System Manufacturer Dell Computer Corporation
System Model DIM4500
System Type X86-based PC
Processor x86 Family 15 Model 1 Stepping 2
GenuineIntel ~1794 Mhz
BIOS Version/Date Intel Corp. A01, 4/26/2002
SMBIOS Version 2.3
And My Computer shows: Intel Pentium 4, CPU 1.80aGHz,
1.79 GHz, 768 MB Ram.
How do I get a new driver if required? Is there a web
site for this? Thanks for the help!

Did the camera come with a driver disk? Mayby try to install the
driver
s off the disc...if there is one.

I am having a similar problem that DonM has except mine is that my BenQ M310
wireless optical mouse does not show up in the notification area when the
receiver is connected to the USB port. In device manager I also get the
same yellow question mark DonM refered to. It shows up in the "other
devices" heading as an unrecognized device.

I had the same scenario happen today when I tried to use my USB flashdirve
but was able to get it to show up by reinstalling the Windows driver from
device manager. My system is a new Velocity Micro B50 notebook running a
Pentium M and 855PM chipset (centrino). Would I need to update drivers from
Intel, or from MS?
I called BenQ, they think it is a defective mouse. I am not convinced it is
at this point. Whom should I call next, MS, Velocity Micro, or BenQ again?

I installed SP2 before trying any of this, so don't know its influence, if
any.

fixed it by installing motherboard drivers from CD that came with the new
computer.
it shows up in device manager as a HID complaint mouse.

Good to hear. This is what I meant by chipset drivers, but I should

appreciate it.
I Ran my original Dell Resource CD to install System
Drivers (Intel 800 Series, Rev A06) as well as two
download installs for Intel 800 series (from Dell=R69250
for Ver A06NB and from Intel= infinst_enu). How do I
tell the current version of my Intel drivers that get
installed on my computer and where to find them listed?

From the search utility I found in Windows, a chipset
file is created each time driver are installed. Within
the file it shows:
..19=skipping update storage driver
20=Found Device ID 24CD
21=Successful Install
Is this important? Why would it skip this driver?

Trying to update the drivers from Device Manager still
does not find software for my devices (4) with yellow
question marks.

This problem is driving me nuts! I do not want to
reformat and install the OS again! Please help!

Try removing all of the devices that have the Yellow Question mark and
reboot. It should reinstall the device. Have your Dell Recovery CD
handy in case it asks for drivers for those devices.

I have a Dell D800 that I absolutely hate the way Dell has done their
driver install from the CD. Basically, you have to insert the CD and
run all of the Setups for the drivers so they will install to the
computer. The drivers are not actually located in a directory on the
CD, but rather inside a CAB file or a Setup (or compressed) file. Yours
may be the same way which would require you to install the drivers from
the CD.

I would check for the latest drivers available for your Dell from their
website, download all of them, and install them and see if that helps
anything. Just make sure the download is for something you have on your
computer as they often offer drivers for optional components. There is
no need to install drivers for devices that you don't have and won't
really mess anything up, but could make this run a little sluggish and
take longer to install new hardware as it adds to the already huge list
of drivers available to XP.

Thanks Nathan for the suggestions. I removed the devices
and rebooted, reinstalled the drivers from the Dell CD.
No change in the Device Manager with yellow question mark
under Other Devices.
The Hardware Update Wizard cannot find the software and I
do not know where Dell places it when I install from the
CD or when I install updated Dell drivers from the web.
Where do I tell the Wizard to go? Or how do I find out?

I am not sure what to do as the drivers you need are most likely on that
CD or for a specific device. What I would suggest would be to get
Everest Home from www.lavalys.com. Use this to find out what hardware
you have in your computer, then follow its provided links to the latest
drivers. You will have to figure out what peice of hardware it is
needing drivers for for each one of those unkown devices, etc.

This is one of those cases where it is difficult to offer support
without being there. That is another option you have is to take it to a
local computer shop and have them fix it up for you.
