HP desktop. Just changed hard drive. Now I get mssg "reboot and select
proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a
key."
No idea of what that means. I DID back up hard drive to external Maxtor but
don't know what to do now. Appreciate any help.

You need to use a "cloning" utility to copy the old Windows drive to the
new one. These utilities usually ship with retail hard drives or they
can be downloaded from the web site of the drive manufacturer from whom
you bought the new drive.

You did not give enough information.
Do you still have the original hard drive? Does it still work?
What program did you use to backup to the Maxtor drive?
Was the backup a mirror image? Did it make a bootable recovery disk?

If you don't have the original drive, or it does not work, you may need the
HP recovery disks for your make and model
to do a fresh installation.
Then after re-installing the same backup software, restore the data from the
Maxtor.

If you have the original drive, and it works, you need to clone it to the
new drive.
The vendor of the new drive will have software for that task.

Give more details and we will give more information.
