Unable to boot directly to hard drive

My system will not boot to my master drive. I receive the following message;
Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot
device and pressa key. But when I press f8 during the boot process I get a
screen that allows me to pick the boot device. When I do that it boots
normally. Is this a Windows xp pro problem or a bios problem. I have set
the bios to look to the floppy , then the cdrom, then the hard drive. I have
reversed the sequence. I have done the auto recovery with the CD and changed
the boot information to the hard drive. This is my first experience with
building a system from the ground up.
Here is what is in my boot.ini;

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect

Any help? Thanks

Mine says this :

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

Maybe you don't need the "1" after rdisk in the parentheses, but rather a "0"?
