To boot your computer from your Windows installation CD, enter your
computer's BIOS and set it to boot first from the optical drive.

After exiting the BIOS, insert the CD into the optical drive, then
restart your computer.

I'm not sure what an optical drive is. There is only a dvd/r-cd/r drive and a
smallplace for my camera card.

'Optical drive' is a generic term for a drive that reads and writes CDs,
DVDs, and/or Blu-Ray discs. It's called 'optical' because the laser is
focused through a lens.

You need to follow the instructions I provided, exactly as I wrote them.

Nope

all you need is your XP cd

just set the bios to boot first from CD and you are all set

I don't think the OP knows what you are talking about or what a BIOS is or
how to access it.

Please give him\her the step by step.

The OP knows exactly what they are talking about and I have tried that 3 times without success. A message comes up on a black screen that says "no operating sys."

Why did you wipe your hard drive clean? What method did you use?

Is this XP disk the one that came with your PC? If so, what is the make
and model of your PC? Is this CD an actual Windows XP installation CD or
is it some sort of PC recovery disk? (What does the CD's label say?)

Do you have all the hardware drivers for your PC? Assuming you are about
to perform a Clean Install, they will be necessary. If you don't have
them, they may be downloaded (more than likely) from the manufacturer's
Web site.
