New hard drive installed - now have issues with MS Office XP

P

PJOregon

I just installed a new (larger) Western Digital hard drive in my desktop. I
used the Western Digital software to copy everything from old to new. My
system fired up fine, and Windows XP starts up without problems. Now, I find
that all my programs seem to work OK EXCEPT the MS Office XP programs. I
have the student/teachers version 2002 of Office, which includes Word, Excel,
PowerPoint and Outlook. None of these programs are working well. Most
critical - Outlook - gives messages such as "No profiles have been created",
and "cannot start MS Outlook". "The server is not available . . ." . When I
try to open Word, I get a "windows installer" screen that says "preparing to
install", followed by "MS Word 10.0 An error has occurred and this feature is
no longer functioning properly. . ."

I am, to put it mildly, furious about this. I tried to remove the entire
Office suite using the "add/remove software" feature in control panel - and
was told to insert the MS office CD. I did that, and got a message "this
patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch exists . . ." My
intent was to uninstall and re-install Office.

SO - I cannot remove the MS Office software, I cannot make it work right,
and it is - as ususal - Microsoft's products that are causing the issues.
None of the dozens of other programs on my system seem to be corrupted at all.

Any suggestions or insight would be appreciated, as I use the Office suite
daily for business purposes and need to get functionality back ASAP.

Thanks,

PJOregon

Seeing that this whole issue centres around MS Office, I recommend that you
repost it in an MS Office newsgroup.

It wouldn't have been very hard for you to have nudged it there
yourself.

Sorry, that's your task, not mine. I only mentioned it so that you could
quickly get help from the most appropriate place.

I admittedly am not a computer expert - and definitely not an expert on the
sea of discussion groups within this website. Sorry about that. My problem
may or may not be completely within the MS Office software as I see it. WHY
am I not able to remove or repair the Office suite software? Is that not a
function of Windows XP, and not MS Office?

Thanks,

PJOregon

I'm not the OP, Peggy.

How was the copy to the new larger hard drive done? You need to use a
disk clone tool such as Ghost to successfully move to a larger drive.
If you just used a "copy" tool then you will need to un-install and re-
install the "failed working" software.

It's an Office problem, the best place to ask is on the Office groups.
Micorosoft Office almost always asks for the cd to do anything relating
to uninstalls or removal of components and the kind of problem that you
encountered is not new, many others have had problems with this and the
experts in the Office groups are the ones who know best how to fix this.
What I can tell you here is that there is an Office Removal Tool
available on the Office web site, find the proper one for your Office
version and see if it can help:
http://search.yahoo.com/search?ei=U...microsoft+office+removal+tool&rs=0&fr2=rs-top

If the Removal Tool fails head over to the proper groups for further
assistance.

You will have to re-install MS Office from the original installation media.
I have found that using hard drive manufacturer cloning utilities are not
kind to MS Office installations..

Not so much an MS Office problem as an inability of the rather basic
manufacturer clone utilities..

So, your system was working fine until you diddled with it using Western
Digital's software. Now you claim Microsoft's products are causing problems.

I must be missing something...

Try this:
1. Revert to the original hard drive.
2. Remove Office
3. Create the new drive.
