XP Home failed to installed security updates

Hi,

My Window auto updates has downloaded the following security update recently.

Security Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB956828)
Security Update for Microsoft Excel Viewer 2003 (KB958434)
Security Update for Microsoft Word Viewer 2003 (KB956366)
Security Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB958439)

However the installation was not successful for may time.

My PC only has Excel 2003 and Word Viewer but not the MS Office 2007 Suite.

I have instead downloaded and installed IBM and Sun Open Office Suite to my
PC earlier on.

Can this be the cause of the problem ?

Also I find that the installation balloon remains at the task bar whenever I
on the PC, Is there anyway to remove it ?

Hi Low,

It is not uncommon to have automatic windows update fail. In many case I
would say its because the updates are already installed without using the
automatic updates features (e.g. while the automatic update feature is
downloading the updates you are updating your software by going to the update
website). Some of course its due to the service being used by other software
while you are updating the system.

If you are pretty sure that at that instant of updating you are not using
the related software, or that the updates are already installed. You can just
simply skip this update and wait for the next batch of patches. To do this,
you can specify at the windows update window not to notify you about this
update further.

If Office 2007 Compatibility Pack (SP1) is installed, that's why you're
being offered KB956828 and KB958439. Tip: Insert your Office/Excel 2003 CD
into the appropriate drive bay before attempting to install these updates.

You may be able to resolve the Excel and Word Viewer issues by (1)
uninstalling the 2003 versions and then installing the 2007 versions.

Hi PA Bear,

I have finally found the solution to this problem.

It was actually due to disabling of all the Add On in my Internet Explores.
I did it earlier because of frequent crashes.

Today I enable all of them and I have successfully installed all the window
updates and other newly downloaded software.

Thank you anyway for your help.

Kindly share this tip with other users if they faced similar unresolved
problem.
