Help with MS Office Update

David Naugler

Hi,

This is a high volume newsgroup. I hope I am not intruding with a well
worn question. I connect to the Internet via public WiFi and sometimes
updates get corrupted and need to be repeated. I've managed to get all
my updates corrected except for the last few for MS Office 2007. The
error messages are not helpful. Downloading the .exe files does not
help. I think I need to reset something. Reinstalling MS Office and
starting from the very beginning would not be a productive solution.
Please tell me what I need to reset in order to install the following
MS Office updates. Thanks.

:

The Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 3 (SP3)
Update for Microsoft Office Access 2007 Help (KB963663)
Update for Microsoft Office Excel 2007 Help (KB963678)

What error number(s) is Windows Update giving for the failures?

What error number(s) is Windows Update giving for the failures?

Thanks for the reply. I'm back on free WiFi at the public library.

I think I broke MS Office update back in September when I closed the
lid of my netbook during update when the library was closing. There
have been a dozen or more automatic attempts since then.

The error code in all cases is 51E. When I follow the link to
microsoft I get adice that does not help. MS does acknowlege that the
WiFi community may have problems so they provide exe files that one
can download to install the update(s). I've tried and they don't work.
Also if one reads the error help files there are tests to determine if
the update has been installed. E.g. if file XYZ does not have a given
version number the update has not been installed.

I`ve listed the 14 MS office updates above that have not been
installed and which I cannot install without help of special magic
from MS Office experts. Thanks.

Is that the error code you get for all of them, when you go to the
Windows Update web site, click "Review your update history" in the left
column, and click the question mark "?" next to the red "Failed" symbol
for the failed updates?

Sorry, I failed to mention that the OS in question is Windows 7. I had
similar problems on a Windows XP partition on my netbook SSD.

I'm ashamed to admit that I tried to use reverse engineering
techniques to solve the problem. I used Notebook to examine the
smaller files in G:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download and found
EULA text. One said that Microsoft limited users liability to $5. I
found that so funny that I deleted the file and all other files that
contained EULA text. My use of destructive testing may have revealed
that Microsoft had hidden product licence key code in the files.
Office became uninstalled. I tried to restore the deleted files from
Trash. I tried to use System Restore. Nothing worked. Now when I try
to open Outlook or any other Office program, it tries and fails to
reinstall. At this point I think my only solution is to uninstall and
reinstall. My experience with Office on WinXP was that I was not given
a second chance. The thing is permanently broken.

This is very sad. I had become very attached to MS Outlook. I had used
OpenOffice but I don't like it. I prefer the better WYSIWYG of MS
Office.

Sorry for being a bad user. Life in a netbook is not trivial.

Hi,

I thought I'd drop in again from the WiFi universe to share my
experiences.

Synopsis: Windows Updates are relatively fragile when downloaded by
WiFi.

I was forced to fully uninstall MS Office. The uninstall went OK but
it had some side effects. With regrets, I downloaded OpenOffice and it
installed with no problems. But OpenOffice does not have an email
program. I tried downloading three programs of Windows Live
Essentials. After a long wait, Resource Monitor told me the
installation was stalled so I terminated it. I then tried to install
only the mail program of Windows Live Essentials and that ended with
error message 0x80070002 that file crt110-i386 is corrupted.

It is helpful to get a meaningful error message.

The error is meaningful if you look it up with any search engine...

You receive a "0x80070002" or "0x80070003" error code after you download
an update from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or from Windows
Server Update Services:

I suspect part of your problem is not that you are using wireless, but
that you are using Public wireless at some public location with numerous
users sharing the connection.

No way I can go along with that. My Vista laptop connects via wi-fi
only, I never use a wired connection with it. Updates come down every
month and work just fine. Whatever problems you are having, it's not
because of wi-fi. Maybe you do have some sort of problem with your
connection, but it's not because it's wireless.

But OpenOffice does not have an email program.

Entirely true. There are a number of free email clients available. Try
Pegasus (www.pmail.com). It does the usual SMTP/POP3, also IMAP,
baysian filtering, any other kind of filtering you like, white lists,
black lists...look at http://www.pmail.com/overviews/ovw_winpmail.htm
for a list of features.
