Network WinME to WinXP

I have a home network with my Windows XP (home, SP2) system that is working
fine, with a router and a cable modem. I want to do a one-time transfer of
files from an old WinME computer to an XP one. I have a crossover cable.
During this, I will not need to access the internet. I want to do this
without messing up my current network (just interrupting it for a while).
I'm not sure how to proceed.

Should I "add a network place" for this temporary connection?

Should I use the "network setup wizard"?

Something else?

It is very important to me to not mess up my existing network in the
process.

Greetings Jud McCranie,

There is no need to add a temporary network place, use the Network Setup
Wizard or do anything else. Since you have a router sharing a cable
connection, you should be able to transfer files from the Windows ME
computer to the XP machine with your existing network connection. That's it!

Sorry, I didn't state the problem clearly enough. The old ME machine is not
currently connected to the network. Using a straight cable (not crossover)
I tried plugging it into the router and I tried plugging it in place of
another one already on the network. In neither of those cases was the added
machine seen on the network.

So what is the easiest way to transfer files from this old computer, which
will take only a few minutes? (It doesn't have a CD burner.)

Jud,

the problem is that the old ME computer doesn't have the proper
network settings. This also means that you're in the wrong
newsgroup.

Just check the old ME computer's network settings, make sure
TCP/IP (or whatever transport protocol is used) is installed
correctly and that a suitable Windows network client is present.

There's nothing to worry about, Jud.

Connect the WinME computer to the router and run XP's Network Setup
Wizard. Tell the Wizard that the computer connects to the network
through a residential gateway. It will make all the right settings
for networking, without messing up (or even interrupting) the existing
network.

Right-click and share the disk or folder that contains the files that
you want to transfer. Access it through My Network Places on the XP
computer.

Connect the WinME computer to the router and run XP's Network Setup

This should be run on the one I'm adding to the network (the WinME one),
right?

I tried that and it said that there was a problem with the network card. In
Device Manager, the network card had a big yellow "?". I uninstalled it,
turned the computer off, and restarted it. It found the network card as new
hardware and installed it, but it still has the problem, so something
happened to the network card.

Yes, I'm suggesting that you run XP's Network Setup Wizard on the
WinME computer.

The big yellow "?" definitely indicates a problem with the network
card installation. Click the card, then click Properties to see
what's wrong. If it says that the driver isn't installed, use the XP
system to download the WinMe driver from the card manufacturer's web
site, transfer the driver to the WinMe machine on a floppy disk or
CD-R, and install it.
