Network sharing of DVD burner

I have two XP computers on my home network.
If I install an internal DVD burner on one computer (a
desktop), can I have the other computer (a notebook) use
the the desktop's DVD burner to copy files? Or, can the
desktop's DVD burner access the notebook's hard drive to
copy any or all of it?

I may be wrong but I think you just get read only access to cd or dvd
writers from other machines.
On my nero software, the network neighbourhood icon is missing, so I assume
I cant copy network files to the dvd writer. I havent tried mapping a
network drive as the other pc isnt turned on. Maybe that would work.
