Network DVD burner "is not accessible"

John Hupp

On a peer network with an XP Home machine and an XP Pro machine that has a
DVD burner, I wanted to use the XP Pro machine's burner to back up files
from the XP Home machine. So I enabled sharing for the DVD burner drive and
set Permissions to allow Full Control to Everyone. With a disc in the
burner that already contains content, I can open the shared resource (Run
\\XPPROCMP\F) and map a drive to that. So all the basic networking
components are fine. But if I put a blank disc in the burner, the burner
program cannot access the drive. I get the error:

Windows Explorer
-------------------
<share> is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource.
Incorrect function.

How can I make this work?

I'm sorry, but what you want isn't possible. A shared DVD (or CD)
burner is a read-only device when accessed over a network, regardless
of the share permissions that you specify.

I'd use Remote Desktop to log into and control the XP Pro machine from
the XP Home machine.

Backing up over the network might not work -- the network connection
might not be able to supply data fast enough to keep the DVD burn
going. You might have to copy the files to a folder on the XP Pro
machine and back them up from there.

Hi

Burner programs can write only to a Burner is connected to the same
computer. If it is too hard, or impossible to start the Burner on its own
computer you can use a remote control program to do so.

Burner when started on the computer that they are attached to, can burn
files that reside on a Mapped Network Drive.
