network question

on xp pro is there a way to set up a home network (3 pc) w/o using the network wizard?
just for learning purposes I would like to set them up manually, but don't know where to start.
any tips appreciated.

Just connect the computers, create identical user accounts on each PC, turn
off any firewall and share a resource.

would I have to manually enter ip # and subnet under the network adapters?
I think a better way to phrase the original question would be am I allowed
to enter my own info under ip # and then browse to that ip address?
