network problems w/Win2k pc

S

Steve

I have a desktop PC running Win2k, a laptop running
winXP, and another laptop running Win2k.

All 3 machines are in the same workgroup. Login IDs
exist on all 3 that are the same id/password.
File/printer sharing is enabled all around.

I have a DSL router setup, with all 3 local area network
connections setup to obtain IP automatically. All 3 pcs
pick up an ip address within the local network (i.e.
192.168.1.xxx).

All 3 can get to the internet, all three can ping each
other by IP address AND by name.

However, no one can connect to the Win2k desktop PC...BUT
the Win2k pc CAN connect to the others.... Any
thoughts?

make sure no firewall running on the LAN connection.also use net view
\\hostname to check the sharing status.

Interesting. I knew nothing about this net view command.
The result I get is:

System Error 5 has occurred.

Access is denied.

Any thoughts on this?? Thanks in advance...

does the 2K machine normally live in a domain?

you might need to map to the IPC$ share, or other shared resource by forcing
the credentials:

net use * \\computername\IPC$ /u:<computername>\<account> password
/persistent:no

where the account exists on the 2K machine, and the password matches the one
for the account. Local administrator would work. If you wish, you can omit
the password, and you will be prompted for it before the mapping occurs.

Hope that helps,

NuTs

No, not ever part of a domain.

I tried the net use command, and got this:

System Error 1385 has occurred.

Logon Failure: the user has not been granted the
requested logon type at this computer.

Any further thoughts? Thanks to all for persisting with
me.

Help me with that one ... why? How? Shouldn't simply
belonging to the same workgroup suffice?

error 5 is permission issue. quoted form http://www.ChicagoTech.net
System error 1385 has occurred - Logon failure: the user has not been
granted the requested logon type at this computer

Symptoms: When using net use \\remotecomouter\ahredname, you may receive
above message.

Resolution: The users do not have permission to connect to the remote
computer. To resolve this problem: on the remote computer, select
Administrative Tools>Local Security Settings>Local Policies>User Rights
Assignment, right-click on Access this computer from the
network>Properties>Add Users or Groups, add everyone or any users you want
to be able to access the computer from the network.
