Networking Win2000 & XP

I've recently tried networking a laptop running Win2K Pro to my main PC
running XP Home Edition.

I'm using Belkin Cable Modem.
The XP PC has a broadband connection to the Internet.

If I give the XP PC a fixed IP address then the Win2K PC can access the
internet but not file share.

If I get the XP PC to Obtain an IP address automatically the Win2K PC can
file share but not use the Internet.

Any ideas on how I can get them both working simultaneously?

Well, the first thing you do is buy a cable modem/DSL router. Hook the WAN
side to the cable modem. Plug the two PC's into the mini-hub on the router.
Set both PC's to automatically receive IP address. Problem solved.

This doesn't solve the problem at all. Larry obviously
doesn't understand that the reason Graeme asked the
question is that didn't work.
I am having the same problem with the same equipment.
Windows wizard replies the two systems are not compatible.
Anyone get it to work?

I have a similar setup ( XP Pro PC ) with a different problem which I
won't bore you with here in this post but , if you'll excuse my
intrusion here , could you tell me how you access the Web in your
setup from the W2K laptop with your machines connected as you describe
?

Does your cable modem icon appear in the laptop with your connection
setup? and ,
