Network Problem in xp

I can't seem to get the computers on my network to recognize each other
and share files.

I bought two HPs w. windows xp and hooked them up w. our old gateway w.
Windows '98 via a linksys router. Used the network wizard (had to
install files to the Windows '98). No go. Tried powering down a few
times and starting over. Figured out that the first computer turned on
could "see" the others, but not vice versa. And no files any which way.

After much whining and cajoling with all companies involved I finally
got a little help from HP. We found out I could ping the DNS addresses
of the computers, but not the names. They all have individual names and
the same workgroup name. At this point I was cut loose and now am at a
loss as to what to do/try.

I'm wondering if there's an executable file I could be missing. Both the
hps came from the same batch and the networking wizard files put in the
Gateway came from them.

Also: I never needed to use the access code that came w. the computers.
Was never prompted, and the file to do it later isn't there. It's been
over six months now. I don't think this is relevant, but mentioned it
just in case.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanx,
Max
