Network linksys router setup question

I have a laptop running XP home and an old desktop computer running win98. I
was able to create a small network when I wasn't using a router. The
original setup was a cable modem into the laptop and a crossover cable
connecting the other computer. This worked fine. I was able to see and use
either PC's files.
Now I wanted to be able to go anywhere in the house with the laptop, so I
added the linksys router to the equation.
I setup the network as follows:
Comcast Cable (ISP) --rg45-->Motorola Cable modem --straight thru
ethernet-->linksys router--straight thru ethernet-->desktop running win98,
laptop running XP home. Both PC's recognize the internet connection, but
neither recognize each other. I have done the following:
Turned off Firewall on laptop XP machine.
Ran network setup wizard, selected residential gateway.
Made sure Network adapters are installed correctly.
Both machines have client for Microsoft networks, file and print sharing
for Microsoft networks, Microsoft TCP/IP ver 6, internet protocol (TCP/IP)
installed.
I have deleted the network adapters and reinstalled them countless times.
I have removed NetBEUI from desktop win98 machine.
Turned everything off to reset, turned back on.

Still cannot get them to see each other.

Sorry the note is so long just trying to give a pretty good back ground as
to want I've tried and what the problem is.

Any suggestion are appreciated. Thanks in advance.
