home network

Is any one able to inform me on how to create a home network using a wired
adsl modem/router that has a linksys access point WAP 54 G connected to it.

I have managed to configure the access point to share the internet on the
laptop but I am bewildered as how to setup a home LAN to access my desktop
from the laptop computer.

Below is my configuration setup any help would be most welcome.

1. desktop computer with
XP home operating system
TI USB Remote NDIS Network Device Adapter
IConnect 621 ADSL modem/router connected via USB to desktop (wired
Not wireless)
Nil - Ethernet card/ports on this computer, only USB

2. laptop computer with
XP professional operating system
Intel(R)PRO/wireless3945ABG Net adapter

3. Linksys Access Point WAP54G version3,
purchased to share networkconnection wirelessly for laptop
and create a home network between the laptop and desktop.
This is connected to Ethernet port of IConnect 621 ADSL router

Lynksys access point -(manual settings as follows)
a. Mode: Mixed
b. Wireless Network Name: Personalized.
c. Channel: 11
d. SSID Broadcast: disabled
e. WEP 128 bit encryption.
f. XP Wireless Zero Configuration started on both computers

4. IConnect 621 ADSL modem/router
2 ports ( 1/USB and 1/Ethernet )
USB port connected to Desktop
Ethernet port connected to Access Point
1/ telephone line connection

Internet Protocol TCP/IP on both computers
Obtain IP address Automatically
Obtain DNS address Automatically

Desktop computer
IP Address 192.168.1.100
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway / DHCP server / DNS servers 192.168.1.254

Laptop wireless computer
IP Address 192.168.1.101
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway / DHCP server / DNS servers 192.168.1.254

Run the Network Setup Wizard on each computer. If the Wizard detects
the ADSL router's shared Internet connection, tell it to use that.
Otherwise, tell the Wizard that the computer connects to the Internet
through a residential gateway. Tell the Wizard to enable File and
Printer Sharing.

Make sure that all firewall programs (Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm,
PC-cillin, etc) are configured to allow access by other computers on
the local area network. Note that some recent antivirus programs
include firewall functions (such as Norton Antivirus' Internet Worm
Protection).

If that doesn't fix the problem, see if the computers can ping each
other by IP address and by computer name. Both pings have to work
before they'll be able to share files.

If that doesn't help, there could be a problem with the network setup.
If I understand correctly, the laptop is connected to the USB port of
the IConnect 621 ADSL router, and the wireless access point is
connected to the router's Ethernet port. Is that right? If so:

1. The ADSL router might not support file sharing between devices
connected simultaneously to its USB and Ethernet ports.

2. The wireless access point might not support file sharing between
its wireless clients and wired computers elsewhere on the wired
network.

A solution would be to replace the wireless access point with a
wireless router and set the network up like this:

1. Wireless router's WAN (Internet) port connects to ADSL router's
Ethernet port. Make sure that the two routers use different subnets.

2. Desktop connects to wireless router's LAN port.

3. Laptop connects to wireless router wirelessly.

Your best first bet, if you haven't done so already, will be to run the
Network Setup Wizard on one computer, then either use the option to make a
setup floppy to take to the second computer or run the Network Setup Wizard
on the second computer and give the same answers you gave on the first
computer. Running the Network Setup Wizard configures a number of options
that need to be configured correctly before you can start sharing files,
folders and printers.

If you have any non-Microsoft firewall or "Internet security" software
installed, you may need to temporarily uninstall it while configuring your
network. The firewall software may be blocking your network and even though
the firewall says it can be disabled, the disable feature often does not
work correctly.

For simplicity's sake, disconnect the ADSL router modem from the desktop USB
port and replace the connection with a USB wireless adapter, or use a PCI
wireless adapter if you prefer. I don't know if both ports on the modem can
be used at the same time but I somehow doubt it since the quickstart guide
makes a point of describing hookup to either one or the other.

Have DHCP and DNS pass-through enabled on the modem-router. Configure the
Windows networking wizard to connect both computers to each other and the
DSL wirelessly through the WAP.
