network probs on XP Home

Hi guys I'm clueless about this stuff and I'm pretty sure
I set something up wrong here. I have a Sony Desktop I'm
trying to network to my Emachines Laptop (both winXP
home). I have a Linksys wireless router and have gotten
the 2 computers to where they are both seeing the
wireless signal. However they can't see each other at all
or share the internet. I called the network the same name
for both machines. I think I may have some wires
connected wrong or something? Also I have a cable modem
and I did not set a host name or domain name for the
router config. Do I need that? The internet is working on
my Desktop PC which is connected by ethernet cable to the
router.
When I go to ipconfig on the Desktop I get:
Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . :
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : wlm.ga.comcast.net
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.100
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

On the Laptop I get:
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Media State . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected
Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Autoconfiguration IP Address. . : 169.254.206.196
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . :

Thanks so much in advance!

Make sure your cable modem is hooked the WAN side of the router, do not use
the uplink connection on the router.

You should not have to make any setting changes to the router, you will not
be on a domain just a home network, XP Home can not join a domain.

After you have everything hooked up shutdown the puters, unplug the power
from the cable modem & router wait about 30 seconds, plug the cable modem in
and wait for the Power & Cable lights to go solid then plug the router in
and wait for it to power up then start the host puter(desktop) follow the
instructions below the do the laptop, this should do it.

Make sure you have simple file sharing enabled.

Start>Control Panel>Folder Options>View>Scroll to the bottom check Use
Simple File Sharing.

First open the Properties of My Network Places, delete or disable all
connections except your internet connection, (all computers). Right click
your IC go to Properties the Local Area Connection Properties will open,
install Client for MS Network, File & Print Sharing, Internet
Protocol(TCP/IP)(on this protocol click Properties select Obtain IP and DNS
Automatically), install NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBios Protocol(this will allow the
firewall to be enabled), click OK. Now back on your Network Connections
click on the left of the page, Setup a Small Home Network, the wizard will
open then just follow the instructions, when you get to the point to Create
a Floppy then do so, then you just run it on the other computer,(insert the
floppy in the other puter open My Computer double click A drive then double
click the link that appears. Be sure to name your Workgroup (not domain) the
same and give each computer a different name.

To hook up Printer sharing just install the printer on the host computer go
to Printer and Faxes right click your printer, then go to Sharing, then set
it to Share then name it, click OK.

Go to the other computer open Printer & Faxes on the left of the page click
add a printer then follow the instructions.

Choose connect to this computer. (type) \\your host puter name\printer name

The problem is that the laptop is not getting a valid IP address from the
router. It says, "Media Disconnected" which means that it's not seeing the
router, or if you're using encryption (WEP, WPA, etc) on your router that
the laptop doesn't have the correct key to connect to the router.
