Ping local computer fails

Guest

I'm having trouble setting up my home network (file & printer sharing) -- but
am able to connect to the internet.

Basic configuration -- two computers running XP. Desktop connected to
Linksys router with ethernet cable. Laptop connected to router through
wireless adapter. Router connected to cable modem, etc.

Desktop successfully pings the router IP 192.168.1.1 and the loopback IP
127.0.0.1 but does not successfully ping its own IP (192.168.1.100) or that
of the laptop. But desktop accesses internet without any problems.

Microsoft support documents seem to indicate perhaps there is a problem with
my tcp/ip stack -- but the fixes they propose go well beyond my knowledge.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Todd

When a computer can't ping its own IP address, the problem is usually
caused by a firewall program that's improperly configured or
incompletely un-installed.
