Network Controller not showing in Device Manager after reinstall of Win XP

Gail Miller

Hi..

(Writing this from my laptop. ) Big computer crash. Had to reformat HDD and
reinstall Win XP. That done, tried to connect to internet thru cable modem
(Comcast). Nothing. Went to start/run/cmd/ on DOS screen wrote ipconfig and
it gies me nothing. Called Comcast. They said I don't have some drivers
installed. Put in my Dell Dimension 4550 Driver disk and thought I had
installed drivers. Resource disk said to go to control panel, device manager
and update driver in Network Controller but none is there! It just goes
Modems and then Other Devices ... Comcast says they don't do computers and I
guess Microsoft will say they don't do Internet Connections.

Can you help???

Thanks in advance, Gail Miller

Hi Gail,

Open System Properties in the Control Panel. On the hardware tab click
Device Manager. Are there any "unknown" devices?

Go to Device Manager and click on the monitor icon that says
"scan for hardware changes", see if your NIC is detected

Is your NIC an onboard chip or a add in PCI card ?.

1. if onboard, check in BIOS to see if it is enabled [long shot but
won't hurt to check]

2. if PCI card, open the case and make sure it is correctly seated in
it's slot.

*NOTE* BEFORE opening the case up unplug the power cord from the wall
socket

Maybe in device manager click on View/Show Hidden devices to see if there is
any ghosted devices. You may also have to install your intel chipset drivers
which are posted on their site. Evolution gave u the link.

Hi Gail,

From the cmd prompt, run "ping 127.0.0.1", does it fail or give a successful
message?
