Device Manager Does not Show Ports Tree

Recently the Hard Disk of my Laptop was broken. So I had to purchase a new
Hard Disk and re-installed WinXp Pro. Thereafter the Internal Modem of my
laptop is not being detected. I tried to install the Modem Driver from the
Driver's CD of the Laptop Company but to no avail as it does not download.
The Modem still shows int he device Manager with a Yellow Mark. Then I tried
to check the Ports but I was amazed to see that there is no Tree for the
Ports which generally shows COM ports and LPT Ports. What might be the
problem? How to rectify the problem and get back the Modem Working so I can
use Faxing software

You need to contact the laptop manufacturer and get *all* the appropriate XP
device drivers - motherboard chipset, modem, and so forth.

Why are you checking for ports while you are having problem with internal
modem??
Internal modem does not use COM nor LPT port.
I have a notebook/laptop myself with internal modem but without any single
COM and LPT port.

If I'm not mistaken, you tried to download the driver for your internal
modem but failed ( unavailable or other reasons ). Is that correct?
If it is, then you have to know what kind of internal modem do you have on
the laptop ( e.g Agere HDA Modem, etc )
If you don't know what it is, take a look on your laptop manual for
specifications or search the internet for your laptop specifications.

Then search on the internet for the driver.
Sites such www.nodevice.com, www.driverguide.com may have the driver for
your modem.

What model and make laptop is it? Does it have an external serial port (DB9,
not USB) and/or a parallel port? If not, then Ports won't be listed in
device manager. As Vanessa said, you need to get the proper driver for the
internal modem. Once the modem is installed properly, it will show as being
on a COM port, but Ports will not show as a separate listing.

If you have a network connection other than through the modem, try going
into device manager, open the modem listing, open the driver tab, and click
on update driver. Let it go out to Windows Update and see if it finds
anything that helps.
