No Ports In Device Manager

A reinstall of Win XP Home has resulted in no (zero) entry of any
Communication Ports node in Device Manager.
Internal modem appears to be working OK.
All USB connections are fine.
Unable to install hardware and software drivers for previously
installed/working cell phone modem, cuz (I believe) Port node in Device
Manager is missing.
Attempts to scan for hardware changes do not generate any Ports entry.
Any ideas on how to manually generate this Ports node short of reinstalling
windows again?

A re-installation of Windows usually means that all of the
drivers for the chipset, peripheral cards, modems, printers,
etc., also need to be re-installed. Many of these files are
not in the Windows XP cdrom but were supplied separately.
Track them down and install them.

As for COM ports, they might need to be activated or set up
in bios configuration. Check the motherboard manual and also
that for the modem.

Thanx for the reply.
This is an Acer 5000 notebook.
Win XP reinstall was done using Acer's recovery CDs.
Nothing in BIOS appears to provide COM port activation, re-setting bios to
original defaults, changes nothing.
A download & reflash of bios changes nothing.
A modem test appears OK.
Still no COM ports in Device Manager.

Any other suggestions?

I have developed the same problem with my Toshiba Satellite Pro. All com
ports except for com1 have disappeared in Device Manager. My internal modem
has also stopped working because it cannot find a com port. BIOS setup is
non existent except for a Toshiba utility that offers minimal control over
configuration.

Here's hoping that someone has the answer on how to get things working again.
