Yellow Question Mark in device manager after fresh XP install

Hi,
I was given a decent (2003ish) laptop, a Dell Inspiron 600m that
we want to use in the office here as a "spare" for doing downloads off
our work Network.
It had virus problems, so I did a reformat and installed XP Pro
from an Enterprise cd we have here. All went well, except for the fact
that in the device manager, I see 6 yellow question marks in "Other
devices":
Ethernet Controller
Multimedia Audio Controller
Network Controller
O2Micro SmartCardBus_Reader
PCI Modem
Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

I have tried reinstalling drivers, and have copied the drivers CAB
file from an operating system on another PC here in the office, but
nothing. Can anyone help with this dilemma? I don't know what type of
Ethernet Controller it is, so how do I find the drivers?

When I try to find the system for support by Dell, it comes up that
the service tag is not correct. I don't get that part either. It's a
"legit" machine, purchased by a Sales Rep who's a consultant.

Thanks,
Rich

Reinstalled drivers from where? In any case, I don't know why you can't
find drivers for your Inspiron 600m - they are readily available on
Dell's tech support website. Here is a TinyURL to the page with all the
downloads for your model:

You should uninstall everything you did because you've obviously
installed the wrong drivers. Install the chipset drivers first and don't
forget any laptop-specific software such as that for power management, etc.

Try downloading from Dell the drivers for that model of laptop. If you have
done this then you might go to http://belarc.com/ and download their free
software. It will tell you exactly what components are in your laptop. This
might allow you to go to the manufacture's web site and download the
specific drivers.

Dell's drivers for the laptop are proprietary for that *specific* model.
You'll need to install the drivers Malke's linked you to resolve the
yellow question marks in DM.

Thanks everyone. Duh, I feel like an idiot, as I was copying the
drivers folder from a desktop. Oops.

Besides getting drivers via download, the Dell came with a resource CD that
contained all drivers for the laptop. If you were also given that CD, all
you have to do is install it, run it and install the drivers it contains.
