Yellow Q mark in Device manager ??

Hi,,

I am currently trying to help my friend get his computer right, (someone here already helped with
another question I had) and my question is regarding why his computer is working just fine but has
yellow Q mark next "Other" in device-manager of which relates to 'video controller'.

After right click on properties of the yellow Q, I find it says that there is an 'error 28',, no
drivers installed for this device. ??? yet, his screen is just fine to look at and the
computer runs fine too.
In the Q-mark area, it states that it is a 'video-controller' problem;;;; is the video-controller
the equivalent of a video-driver? is it trying to tell us that it needs drivers for the installed
agp card?
If this is the case, then why for goodness sake does the computer run fine?

I looked all over his computer today to try and find out what agp card he has,, but couldnt find an
area with that info...... is there an area? (I wish I had taken my personal disk with me,,
it has all of my utilities on it, especially 'Everest' and 'Aida')

I hope I have given enough info for someone to understand the problem....I really am stumped as to
why it works fine, yet shows these errors/Q's in device manager.
He is not yet on the internet either.

Ta for help.

Ta for help.

Have you checked in Control Panel -> Display Properties -> Settings -> Advanced
for information on the display adapter? Also, in Device Manager, look under
Display Adapter to see what video card is installed on your friend's computer.

It's possible that a feature of the video card did not install correctly. An
option here would be to right click the problem device in Device Manager, select
Uninstall, and restart the computer. On startup, Windows will try to reinstall
the device.

If it's any help, here's a link to download Everest.

Everest Free Edition 2.20

Good luck

Hello Nepatsfan,,,, thank you for reply;
I will try and give as much information as I can,, it is all coming from memory, but not
computers, mine. (where I live, we are having what we call a 'heat-wave',, temperature has
been very hot for last week and we got at least another week to go..... so 'my' memory may been
ailing a bit)

Yes,, I went there via 'right-click' on my-comp. Thing is, I am home now and I am trying my
best to remember what I saw. I dont believe there was even a catagorey "Display-Adapter",,
because I know I would have checked it first... Only thing I can recall that has anything
to do with Display or Agp or Video card, is the yellow Q. (of which was under catagorey of "Other"0

Yes, I understand how to re-install a driver or get one from the net and put it on........
but I have to admit, I just cant seem to get by or understand why the computer is working just fine
if it doesnt even have the drivers for the card that is installed within itself...? I just
dont get it?
(aaaaahhhhhhhhh,,,, but wait friend, I have just re-read what you wrote above, and you mentioned
that perhaps one element of the card didnt instal correctly,, maybe the answer is there.) (also,
you wrote to 'uninstal' existing driver and reboot,,, this is where it gets tricky for me;;
because if i uninstal and reboot, and on reboot we end up with icons the size of nan's bloomers,
then i wont know what to do from there..... thats as far as I can go;; I dont mind trying things,
but if I leave friends computer like that,,,,,, there is no way he will ever buy me a beer
again.)

I am hoping to be near that computer in next 36hrs or so,,,, I really would like to try and
understand what I have found,, and especially after you said that maybe that not all of the
'driver' got installed correctly;; I am still confused to why it still works fine though......
it makes me think of a car, and if i decided to pull the motor out, would the gearbox still work?
Yet, here, we got a video card that is installed, shouldnt work cos' there isnt even a driver
installed, yet it works..... ??????? duh?? I cant get past this.......... is Windows
supplying a driver regardless? if Windows is, then its doing a fripping good job, because his
screen looks much better than mine.

got to sleep.
thank you for helping me/us.

oh, its okay about everest, I have it on a disk,,,,, he doesnt have the internet anyway. (in
fact, he is getting it put on this tuesday, and that is why I am helping him solve these problems
before the internet disk comes from his isp.

You mentioned in your other post that your friend had a shop install Windows XP
for him on a new hard drive. You might want to suggest he contact the shop to
see if they can shed some light on the problem you're seeing in Device Manager.
They may give some clue as to what hardware drivers they installed along with
XP.

You bring up a good point with regard to uninstalling the problem device. If
everything appears to be working properly now, the best approach may be to leave
things as they are. You could advise your friend to see if the shop can fix the
problem.

Good luck

One last thing,, if I am correct in recalling that I didnt see a 'Display Adapter' in D/manager,
does this mean that it took the title of 'Other' and produced the yellow Q's?
Good luck

I'll be honest, if you don't see an entry titled Display Adapter in Device
Manager, I couldn't say for sure what drivers Windows is using for your friend's
video adapter.
