Problems with devices

D

David

I just had to re-load the OEM software we got with our Dell Latitiude
D600 and, after installing the drivers, I can't seem to connect to the
net. While I see the light on the back of the unit indicating that the
hardware connection is in place, it's not recognized by the system.
When I look in the Device Manager, I see lots of items in the 'Other
devices' container with question marks and exclamation marks. These
include the Ethernet Controller, Multimedia Audio Controller, Network
Controller, O2Micro SmartCardBus_Reader, PCI Modem, and Video
Controller (VGA Compatible).

Any hints re how to get this stuff working would be most appreciated!

TIA,
David

David,

It seems that you have not completely installed the drivers for all the devices on your machine.
Please go through the support CDs that came with your laptop and install the drivers for the network
interface card and all the hardware components that show up with a yellow question mark within
device manager.

Double click the devices with exclamation or question mark and check what is
error and error code under "Device Status"

D

David

I've tried to do that but the wizard doesn't find the files it's
looking for on the CD and then asks to check on the internet which, of
course, I can't do.

Any thoughts?

Physically check the installation cd, in explorer, for a drivers/system
Folder
You sure the drivers werent on a seperate cd?
Check Dell support, specific to your tag #.

Yes, I've checked the device driver CD, inspected it, run its setup
utility but it really doesn't help with this problem. My son actually
loaded the s/w initially so I'm going though and completely reloading
the OS, drivers, and apps. Dell Support is no help unless I want to pay
$$ which is ridiculous if you consider this was caused by their support
actopms connected to my hardware support contract.

If the same problems occur again, can't I just go on the net on another
machine to find drivers for each of the devices, burn them to a cd and
then use that to fix any problems on the Dell? Can you tell me what
information about the devices I need to use to find the right drivers?

TIA,
David

As I suspected, I'm having the same problems after re-installing the
OS. I'm on the Dell site looking for the right drivers but it's not
easy! As an example, both the Network Controller and Ethernet
Controller device property views indicate nothing about the devices
that would let me search for the proper driver on the Dell site.

Any thoughts would be most appreciated!

If you are looking for drivers on Dell's site, you just require the model number of your laptop. Its
even easier if you have the asset code of your dell laptop machine handy.

Well, I'm a fairly astute computer user (software mostly, admittedly)
but when I look up my model number on the dell site, I get a whole host
of options and it's not the least bit clear to me which to choose. For
example, while looking at the Network or Communication sections, I see
nothing addressing the Network Controller or Ethernet Controller. I
also find nothing when I search on my service tag number.

Can you give me a hint?

Hello David,

Assuming you have a Dell Latitude D600 laptop and are running Windows XP (english), you can find the
Network Interface Card drivers under the "Network" section on the following page:

Yes, well, I've found the appropriate drivers for all but the Ethernet

The problem is that there are 19 driver choices under the Network

The drivers under "Network" are for various wired and wireless network adapters that come with the
different configurations of Dell Latitude D600. You ought to know which wired/wireless network
adapters your laptop has. Please consult your manual for this information.

You can also find the asset code on the underside of your machine and use that to download the
drivers that you exactly need. It would be much easier that ways.

Look under the "Network" section. You will see drivers for various kinds of

that the
hardware connection is in place, it's not recognized by the
system.
When I look in the Device Manager, I see lots of items in the
'Other
devices' container with question marks and exclamation marks.
These
include the Ethernet Controller, Multimedia Audio Controller,
Network
Controller, O2Micro SmartCardBus_Reader, PCI Modem, and Video
Controller (VGA Compatible).

Any hints re how to get this stuff working would be most
appreciated!

TIA,
David

On my system, I insert the ResourceCD. The devices are detected. I
select each device and extract the drivers onto my hard disk. Then I
install the drivers from the hard disk location.
