'network cable unplugged"

S

Steve

Hi
Can someone PLEASE help me!
I've just moved my DVD-R from one pc into another and
rebooted. Got the usual 'you need to activate windows xp
again' due to 'significant' hardware changes message.
However, my pc now says that the network cable is
unplugged(!). Its not and I've:
disabled/enabled the onboard LAN
changed the patch cable
reinstalled the LAN adaptor drivers
tried a system restore
uninstalled/reinstalled both the DVD-R and network adaptor
All without any luck

To say I'm confused is an understatement

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I need to check
my emails!

Thanks in advance
Steve

Check the following conditions:
1. Are you having 2 PCs i.e. peer to peer?
2. If yes, whats the network cable status on other PC? You should b
getting same msg on both pcs
3. Or Try changing ends of cable
4. Check the network device in device manager whether driver an
resources are correct
5. If network dvice is an add on card, it may have loosened whil
replacing DVD drive

Following is my problem. I am having standalone PC but I want to assig
a static IP address to my network card. But it is disabled as there i
no other PC or switch connected to my PC. So I would get the messag
"network cable unplugged" hence the IP address assigned to my networ
card, wont be active and reply to any command like 'ping'

In Windows 98 or NT we could use it but in Windows 2000 or XP we cant.

Any trick to overcome this problem?

You could install the Loopback Adapter:

Go to Control Panel, and run the Add Hardware wizard;
Click Next;
Choose "Yes, I have already connected the hardware", Next;
Choose "Add a new hardware device" from the end of the list , Next.
Choose "Install the hardware that I manually select from a list", Next;
Next again;
Select "Network Adapters", Next;
Choose "Microsoft" as a manufacturer,
Choose " Microsoft Loopback Adapter";
Next, Next, Finish.
