Network Cable Unplugged

I know this has come up before. However, this one has me stumped.
I went through this list:
http://tinyurl.com/dmn79

However, I still have the problem.

It's an XP Home computer, and the setup was working fine until a
lightning storm. (Bother.)

It's not the cabling; I've tested that with a laptop and it works fine.
It's not the NIC; I replaced it twice, and tested the latest one in
another computer.
It's not the PCI slot; I've tried it in all three slots and it doesn't
work in any of them.
The modem works in both slots I tested it in.

So, as you can see, I'm scratching my head.

Any ideas?

Jack,

Thanks for the response!
I worked through the link you gave, but it didn't resolve the issue.
I found a couple of odd things in the process, though.
On a ping, I usually get four "request timed out" messages. However,
one time I got the following:
Pinging 192.168.1.1 with 32 bytes of data:
Hardware error.
Reply from 192.168.1.1: byes=32 time=2ms TTL=2
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

Also, I now have a "connected" status in Network Connections. It
blinks "Network Cable Unplugged" every few seconds. But the pings
still don't work.
I can't connect to my DHCP server, so I manually configured the
information and ipconfig confirms it's correct.

What do you make of all that?

Matthew
