cable unplugged after lightning hit

I have bellsouth dsl w/a westell modem running on Windows XP home edition.
Sunday night, we got hit by lightning, knocking out the dsl modem. I received
the replacement, however, the ethernet light will not come up. When I
troubleshoot it i see the errors that the cable is unplugged. I replaced all
of the cables with new ones in case they were fried by the storm. There are
no errors in device manager foir my network card and no errors in event
viewer. Everything indicates that the card is working properly. Plus, it
worked prior to the lightning! The only way I can get access to the internet
is through my usb port. Any ideas how to troubleshoot this error? Thanks!

I would suspect that despite the report that the card is "working properly",
it isn't - it's also fried.

I believe that the system determines that the card is "working" by running
a loopback test. This probably does not exercise the drivers which would
apply signal to the cable. I actually had that situation on a multiplexed
RS-422 interface board, back when I was an HP repair tech. If the original
DSL modem was fried by lightning, consider the NIC a goner, too; they
aren't that expensive to replace, not like replacin a modem.

I suspected that it was gone as well too but wanted other opinions. Thanks so
much for responding!
