"Network Cable Is Unplugged" or "Network Card Is Unplugged" Message

I'm trying to set up my daughter's laptop on our home DSL network. Both the
direct cable connection and the wireless card connection aren't working. In
both cases the message is that the cable or card are unplugged. I've tested
both the cable and the card on 2 other laptops; they both worked. Prior to
trying to set up here, she had functioning Internet using a cable
router/modem. Is it possible that use of the cable high speed Internet
service has changed the settings so that a standard DSL router or WiFi card
won't work on this computer?

Any suggestions as to what to look for will be greatly appreciated.

Bob,

Go into System Properties - Device Manager - Properties for the wireless card,
and under the Power Management tab, disable "Allow the computer to turn off this
device...".

Don't find those choices. Are you sure that's the sequence?

Control Panel - System - Device Manager.

The network card should be under Network adapters.

Right click on the network card - Properties.

The Properties wizard for the network card should have a tab for Power
Management.

I had a similar problem - tracked it down to the speed autonegotiation
settings - they had somehow decided to connect at 100MBS, then concluded
that they were no longer connected - I set the speed back to 10MBS full
duplex and away they went.

Might be useful ...

Nope, I don't have a "Power" choice.

On my system:XP Pro

Double Click (DC) Control Panel/Network Settings
Right Mouse (RM) on your Lan Adaptor - then Properties.
Tick the "Show Icon ... when connected"
OK back out

Hover your mouse over the System Tray Icon - this will show speed and
packets xfered

If Speed is 100MBS that could be your problem - if so

Go back too lan adaptor properties and use Configure/Advanced on the adaptor
card - check speed and other settings there.
