network cable unplugged

error message is "a network cable is unplugged" I am
using xp pro. all of the cables are good. I am using a
dsl modem and router to connect. I am now using a dial up
to go online and seek help.

I posted a similar message earlier. My XP system gives
the same message if I plug it into the BEFSR41 or WRT54G
router. I had to attach a hub to one of the routers to
get it to see it was plugged in. I'll be interested in
any help you get as well.
If you have hub, you might try what I did.

I consider the following under this circumstance.

1. The network cable is hand crimped and not working
correctly. This is by far the most likely. Professional
installers avoid hand crimped cables.
2. Driver for the NIC is wrong. Try pinging the loop
back address of 127.0.0.1. If the ping returns ok that
tells you the driver is good and the TCP/IP stack is
functioning. If the ping times out you need to update the
NIC driver and/or reinstall TCP/IP.
3. Bad router port. This is possible but I consider it
unlikely. Try switching to another port on the router.
Make sure you can communicate with the router per the mfg
instructions.
4. More than one NIC in the machine.
