Network Adapter problem/cable unplugged Xp Home SP2

I've been going crazy with this one.
Installed a new WD 160gb hard disk this weekend (primary slave).
Installation went fine, although after setup was all finished my ethernet
card stopped working.
Now I get a message saying "Local Area Connection (n) Network cable is
unplugged" where (n) seems to change nearly every time I boot up. I think I'm
up to Local Area Connection 11 or 12 now.
Device Manager says card is recognized and functioning properly.
Linksys card only gives me orange light when cable is plugged in.
New Belkin card only has a green light which never lights up.

Original Linksys PCI card hooked up to a cable modem. Worked fine until this
weekend.

Tried the following (and probably more I'm forgetting):
-Moved Network adapter to each of other PCI slots.
-(3) different CAT5 cables all of which work elsewhere
-Brand new Belkin network card in each of (3) slots
-New cable modem (works fine thru USB, not ethernet)
-New drivers for network adapter card(s)
-Reset TCP/IP per Microsoft 299357
-Reset Winsock catalog
-Updated BIOS
-Uninstalled new hard drive, no change so put it back in
-Manually set data transmission speed to 10/half, 10/full, 100 half,
100/full, no luck
-Performed repair install of Windows XP
-Uninstall and reinstall network adapter (even though it does this every
time I moved the card anyway)
-Full virus scan
-All current Windows updates were installed (until reinstall from CD...)

I'm running out of things to try - any ideas?
Thanks much
Joe

You have been a busy beaver!! I doubt if installing a slave HD would affect
network connectivity - except that during the physical installation of the
HD there was some other "physical" disruption.
One cause for multiple "local connection #" is that the connection settings
have been changed/disrupted/deleted and each time the computer is booted
connection setup tries to continue - also the many attempts at card/adapter
changes causes connection setting changes.
You did say - but did you check/reconfigure the connection configuration?

I didn't think that installing the drive would have done anything either...
oh well.
I checked all the connections inside and everything looked OK - dont think
there's anything on the motherboard itself that could affect *only* the
network card. (All other PCI cards function fine in any slot). MB is Intel
845GVSR (no onboard LAN)

Only network configuration I changed was the transmission speed when trying
10/100 etc. It's back to Auto now since changing it didn't do anything.

DHCP is all auto/DNS etc as it was before.

As far as the multiple connection #s, if the number goes up even if I don't
make a change (no uninstall/reinstall of drivers or hardware) does that mean
the last attempt didn't succeed (although obviously it didn't!)?

Once upon a time I had a similar issue with a digital camera connected via
USB - the camera stopped talking to the computer and I had numbers like
"Canon digital camera 8" when I tried to connect.
The helpful Canon rep had me do some registry editing to erase all of the
Canon entires, next time I tried to connect was back to "Canon Digital
Camera" and everything worked great again.

Even though that was USB and a totally different animal, I can't get out of
my head that perhaps something similar has gone on here.

Any and all thoughts/ideas are most welcome
Thanks-

Joe - run "ipconfig /all" from a command prompt.

Joe - results of ipconfig /all indicate absence of a network. At the
command prompt run "ping 127.0.0.1. Correct results, successful sending and
receiving packets, will verify TCP/IP is installed and functioning on your
computer. If you receive failure results e.g. timed out - use Help and
Support function regarding "TCP/IP" and "Network connections".

G

Guest

Ping'd 127.0.0.1 - results looked fine. Good response on all packets.
So TCP/IP seems to be OK...
Now what?!?
