LORI JOHNSON

I am trying to set up my network. I have PC w/ XP on it and a notebook w/ Windows 2000 professional edition. I have DSL at my location and both PC's are connected to the DSL. THE PC is connected w/ a Linksys router and is hardwired and the laptop is using the wireless card linksys to connect also.

I want to print from my laptop using the printer that is connected to my PC. I went to the printer folder and chose sharing. Then I went to networking and it said I can use it to set up a network. I followed all the instructions and it told me to copy it to a disk which I did and take it to the next computer I want to network w/. Well, when I plug the disk into my laptop, It gives me an error message saying that It doesn't work w/ Windows 2000 and I have to look in the HELP to figure out how to set up the network. I don't see any i nfo on it in help.

Please help me. I am doing the best I can and this is taking me forever!

Thanks,
Lori

So you have both computers hooked up to dsl

basically all i did was

go to
Control Panel
Network or internet connections

then set up or change your home and small network

Also before you do this have your Windows XP firewall set up

it doesn't work the best..but its better than no firewall
at all

plus the soon SP2 for windows xp will be better

email me if anything else

Try to do it manually not thru the network wizard.
Make sure the both computers on the same workgroup.
to do so: right click on 'my computer' and select
properties. Under 'computer name' tab make sure the both
XP and 2000 have the same workgroup. (XP Home's default
workgroup is MSHome, 2000's I guess - workgroup: change it
to mshome or vise versa)
If you can connect to the internet thru the DSL, your TCP
or IP address range should be OK, you don't have to change
them. Once they are on the same workgroup you should be
able to print from your laptop.

Thank you for your response. I am actually not computer smart to be doing all this technical stuff so I am unsure what to do on my laptop to make it work. I am actually looking for where to find step by step instrctions that even a dummy like me can follow! Thanks for your help tho

Good,
Do it a simple way.
Restart your laptop if it finds it automatically by
itself. After a while go to your Printer and Faxes if you
can see the other printer. If you still cannot see the
printer do this:

On the shared name for the printer type in exactly as
follows:
\\yourXPname\printer

where: 'yourXPname' is your PC's name, you can find it out
going to the properties again (where you did change the
workgroup) and under the computer name tab you'll see your
XP PC's computer name and type that exactly instead of the
yourXPname.
'printer' is your printer's shared name.

good luck Lori,

TJ, I did what you told me and changed them both to MSHOME.

Now, when I go into printers to try to add printer it is
asking me for the shared printer name? On my main PC I
named it printer.. but when I type that in the laptop it
doesn't find it? Any clue?

Thank you so much for all your help. I still can't get it. I am trying to call a helpline to see if someone can walk me through it. ON my main pc there is a button that says you can install additional drivers to make it easier? I don't know anythinga bout that but I am giong to give it a try.
